Speculation that the Roman dictator Julius Caesar was born by the method now known as C-section is apparently false. Although Caesarean sections were performed in Roman times, no classical source records a mother surviving such a delivery, – the earliest recorded survival dates to the 12th century scholar and physician Maimonides (see Commentary to Mishnah Bekhorot 8:2).
he who first received the name of Caesar was called by this name either because he slew in battle an elephant
or because he had a thick head of hair [caesaries is a Latin term for hair] when he came forth from his mother’s womb, or, finally, because he had bright grey eyes [caesiis is Latin for “blind,” and “grey eyes” may refer to glaucoma]
from historia augusta
Caesar could not be born this way because at the time the procedure was performed only on dead women, and his mother died ten years before Caesar’s murder in the Senate (in 54 BC).
